Understanding global healthcare M&A: a comparative analysis of deal volume and value (2015–2024)

This infographic examines global M&A activity in healthcare, drawing on data from financial market intelligence platform Dealogic.

Healthcare M&A significantly impacts market dynamics, competition, and innovation, playing a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the healthcare industry. Two critical metrics for gauging this activity are the volume of deals and the deal value. Volume represents the total number of M&A deals, while deal value indicates the combined financial worth of these transactions. Both metrics provide valuable insights into market dynamics and investor confidence.

The infographic displays global data on healthcare M&A from 2015 to 2024, illustrating notable trends and fluctuations and indicating a significant spike in M&A volume and deal value of M&A in 2021. However, a noteworthy decline in 2022 is likely attributed to rising interest rates. Despite this downturn, the sector shows signs of recovery in 2023, continuing into the early months of 2024, suggesting a resilient market adapting to new economic conditions.

It is also noteworthy that healthcare services as a percentage of total healthcare deals is consistently larger when measured by volume than by value, indicating that the average deal size in services is lower than in other areas of healthcare such as pharma and medtech.
