German for profits’ growing influence in the healthcare sector

Germany’s for-profit hospital sector has a growing role in the market’s provision. Between 2014 and 2021, the percentage of German hospitals which were owned by the for-profit sector rose 2.3 percentage points to 44.5% and the number of beds controlled by the for-profit sector rose 0.9 percentage points to 24%.

As German public hospitals close, with or without government intervention, we could expect to see the private sector play an even more prominent role in provision.

Germany’s for-profit sector is much more involved than France, Italy and Portugal’s are in their respective markets. The proportion of private beds compared to total beds in Germany is more than double that seen in Portugal. Hover your cursor over the bars to see how the markets stack up.
