Private equity interest in Europe’s healthcare services indicates 2024 recovery after a sharp decline last year

This infographic examines European private equity (PE) activity in healthcare.

The data is collectively drawn from PitchBook, and S&P Capital IQ.

The European private equity investment in healthcare reached ~ €9 billion across 154 deals as of August 2024. This recovery follows a sharp decline in 2023, where the total deal volume for 2023 was ~ €15.9 billion. These numbers by mid-2024 indicate that private equity interest in the healthcare sector is gaining momentum.

Over the past 15 years, the sector has undergone significant changes and delivered strong returns, with healthcare stocks outperforming the MSCI Europe Index, which measures the performance of large and mid-cap companies across developed European countries.

Studies show that despite its complexity, the European healthcare market presents substantial opportunities, especially in digital health and biotech, supported by EU regulatory harmonisation.
